top 10 universities

Top 10 universities

1. University of Cambridge

Britain's University of Cambridge has topped the list, making it the best university in the world for science.
That's not all the good news Cambridge received this month.
An anonymous American donor gave $1.85 million (£960,000) to set up an endowment fund in honour of cosmologist-author Stephen Hawking.
In 2009, the university will celebrate its 800th anniversary, making it one of the world's oldest universities.
Cambridge is the largest university in the United Kingdom (over 100 departments, faculties and schools).
Its contribution to the world has ranged from the discovery of the mechanism of blood circulation to the structure of DNA, from the great philosophers of the early 15th century to the groundbreaking work of its many Nobel Prize winners (more than 60 distinguished names feature on the list).
2. University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is one of the oldest English-speaking universities.
It can lay claim to nine centuries of documented existence.
According to the university's Web site, there is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.
Except for St Hilda's -- which continues to remain an all-women college -- all of Oxford's 39 colleges now admit both men and women.
3. Harvard University

Refusing to be left behind, the Americans follow with a vengeance.
Harvard University is ranked No 3.
Harvard College was established in 1636 and was named for its first benefactor, John Harvard of Charlestown.
Harvard was a young minister who, on his death in 1638, left his library and half his estate to the newly established institution.
It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.
Seven presidents of the United States (John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Rutherford B Hayes, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and George W Bush) were graduates of Harvard.
Its faculty has produced 40 Nobel laureates.
The US News & World Report ranks Harvard at No 1 in its rating for America's best universities for the year 2005.
4. University of California, Berkeley

The roots of the University of California go back to the gold rush days of 1849, when the drafters of the state's constitution required the legislature to 'encourage by all suitable means the promotion of intellectual, scientific, moral and agricultural improvement' of the people of California.
The university that was born nearly 20 years later -- on March 23, 1868 -- was the product of a merger between the College of California (a private institution) and the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College.
Among other things, the university is credited with the isolation of the human polio virus and the discovery of all artificial elements heavier than uranium.
Eighteen members of the Berkeley faculty have been awarded Nobel Prizes for these and subsequent discoveries, as well as in literature and economics.
5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

It's probably one of the most famous universities in the world.
But did you know its founder, William Barton Rogers, apparently never received a degree?
In 1853, he moved to Boston, where he enlisted the support of the scientific community to create an institution for technical and scientific education. It was largely through his efforts that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was born in 1861.
Today, the Institute has more than 900 faculty and 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
It is organised into five Schools -- Architecture and Planning, Engineering, Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Management, and Science -- and the Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology.
Fifty-nine current or former members of the MIT community have won the Nobel Prize.
The US News & World Report ranks MIT -- along with Stanford University and Duke University -- at No 5 in its rating for America's best universities for the year 2005.
6. Stanford University

Stanford University was dedicated by Leland Stanford and Jane Eliza to their son, Leland Junior.
Leland Junior was in Italy with his family when he was struck by typhoid. He later succumbed to the illness. He was 15.
When they returned to the US, the Stanfords decided to set up a university. After six years of planning and building, the Stanford University opened on October 1, 1891.
Stanford, like Johns Hopkins and Cornell Universities, followed the German model of providing graduate as well as undergraduate instruction and stressing on research along with teaching.
Stanford's current community of scholars includes 17 Nobel laureates and four Pulitzer Prize winners.
Famous Stanford alumni include:
· Vinton Cerf, the 'father of the Internet'
· Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft
· Vance Coffman, president and CEO, Lockheed Martin Corp
· Carleton Fiorina, president and CEO, Hewlett-Packard Co
· Doris Fisher, co-founder, Gap, Inc
· William Hewlett and David Packard (both deceased), founders, Hewlett-Packard Co
· Philip Knight, chairman and CEO, Nike, Inc
· Chih-Yuan 'Jerry' Yang and David Filo, founders of Yahoo!
· Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page, founders of Google

7. University of Tokyo

It is the only Asian university to figure in the top 10 list.
Established in 1877, the University of Tokyo is Japan's oldest university.
With 10 faculties, 15 graduate schools and 11 research institutes (including the Research Centre for Advanced Science and Technology), it has been a guiding force in research and education.
It offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and provides research facilities.
The University has a faculty of approximately 2,800 professors, associate professors and lecturers, and a total student enrollment of about 28,000.
As of 2003, approximately 2,100 international students and 2,200 foreign researchers come annually to the University for short and extended visits.
8. Princeton University

British North America's fourth college was known as the College of New Jersey until 1896.
Located in Elizabeth for one year and in Newark for nine, the College of New Jersey moved to Princeton in 1756.
It was housed in Nassau Hall, which was built on land donated by Nathaniel Fitzrandolph.
In 1896, expanded programmes won the college university status, and the College of New Jersey was officially renamed Princeton University in honour of its host community, Princeton.
In 2002-2003, Princeton enrolled 6,632 students -- 4,635 undergraduates and 1,997 graduate students.
The University plays a major role in the educational, cultural and economic life of the region.
Some famous Princeton alumni include Woodrow Wilson and James Madison, former presidents of the United States.
9. California Institute of Technology

You may have run into the work of past Caltech scientists without even knowing it.
If your mom ever told you to take Vitamin C to fend off a cold, you can thank Linus Pauling, the Caltech chemist who discovered the nature of the chemical bond in 1930 (his ideas about vitamins came later). Pauling won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1954 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962.
After an earthquake, news anchors can tell us how relatively shaken up we were, courtesy of the formula geophysicist Charles Richter devised in the 1920s for measuring the size of Southern California earthquakes.
And if anyone's ever told you to stop acting so 'left brain', it's because of the pioneering brain hemisphere research done by Caltech psychobiologist Roger Sperry (another Nobelist).
Caltech was established thanks to Pasadena philanthropist Amos Throop.
In September 1891, he rented the Wooster Block building for the purpose of establishing Throop University, the forerunner to Caltech.
Throop might have remained just a good local school had it not been for the arrival in Pasadena of astronomer George Ellery Hale. The first director of the Mount Wilson Observatory, Hale became a member of Throop's board of trustees in 1907, and envisioned moulding it into a first-class institution for engineering and scientific research and education. Under his leadership Throop's transformation began.
By 1921, Hale had been joined by chemist Arthur A Noyes and physicist Robert A Millikan. These three men set the school, which by then had been renamed the California Institute of Technology, firmly on its new course.
Today, 30 of the Institute's alumni are Nobel Prize recipients.
10. Imperial College of London

The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine was established in 1907.
Set in London's scientific and cultural heartland, South Kensington, it was created though a merger between the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines.
Various colleges have merged with the College since. These include St Mary's Hospital Medical School in 1988 and the National Heart and Lung Institute in 1995.
In 1997, Charing Cross, Westminster Medical School and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School merged with the College to form the Imperial College School of Medicine.
And, in 2000, Wye College and the The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology merged with the College.
The College boasts of 14 Nobel Prize winners.

10. INQ1 Facebook phone

inq1

Yes, the INQ1. We're almost as surprised to see it here as you are. But the INQ1 really is a fantastic budget option, which serves a specific purpose and does it well.

And since we're trying to include a fair range of good handsets instead of just turning this into an Apple/HTC blowout, the INQ1 rightly deserves its place.

The INQ1 is more commonly referred to as the Facebook phone, and is built around the concept of keeping you up to date with your social networking needs.

More specifically, the INQ1 comes loaded with Facebook, Last.fm, Skype and Windows Live integration. And for under £100, it's one of the best budget phonese and a veritable bargain.

9. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

5530

While the Nokia N97 and 5800 XpressMusic phones are clambering over each other to gain attention at the more expensive range of the market, the 5530 offers something refreshingly different.

It offers a 2.9-inch touchscreen with a music-orientated interface and all for just £130. Probably the best budget touchscreen phone available today.

8. Motorola DEXT

moto dext

Once a giant in the world of mobile phones, Motorola went quiet for quite a while. It made almost 10,000 people redundant in 2008 and the end looked in sight. However, the end has not arrived, and Moto has come back with a vengeance in 2009 with the much-mooted Motorola DEXT phone.

Free on contracts from around £30 a month, the DEXT is a Google Android-powered handset with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

What's more, Motorola has supercharged Android with its own customised overlay, called MotoBlur. It's similar in function to HTC's Sense UI although maybe not quite as likeable.

The trump card is that the DEXT is one of the best media phone available at the moment – which says a lot.

7. LG BL40 Chocolate

bl40

Probably the most striking of all the phones on display here, the latest LG Chocolate is the world's first full-widescreen 21:9 phone.

The chassis is a combination of metal and glass, with vibrant red plastic at either end, with the top housing the 3.5mm headphone port and the power/lock key.

It's designed from the ground up to be a media phone, and indeed, watching movies is a pleasure, as is navigating large music collections.

6. Samsung i8910 HD

i8910 hd

If size matters to you, the i8910 HD is probably the largest handset in this group.

It's got a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, and it's as buff as they come, too, with the solid metal and plastic chassis contributing to the 148g weight (the iPhone 3GS weighs 135g).

The range of applications and features on the phone is staggering, and the touchscreen interface and response is Samsung's best yet.

You just have to work out if you want to be carrying such a large phone around with you everywhere you go...

5. Palm Pre

palm pre

The Palm Pre was probably the most hyped phone of 2009. Hailed as the saviour of Palm, it initially promised to at least threaten the iPhone at the top of the touchscreen pile.

One thing's for sure, it's more suited for business users because of its slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

In fact, if you peek under the hood, you'll find a quick Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 processor, 8GB of internal memory, 802.11g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with A2DP stereo.

This is a capable mobile computer that supports multi-tasking, contact sync across multiple web services, and push email that could lead to swift adoption at companies both large and small, filling the void left by the popular Palm Treo from years ago.

In truth though, it's no iPhone-beater. But that's not in any way a criticism, more of a back-handed compliment to Apple in fact, because the Pre is still a seriously nice piece of kit.

4. HTC HD2

htc hd2

It's not out in the shops for another couple of weeks, but that's not going to stop the brand-spanking new HTC HD2 - codenamed Leo - from making our top 10.

It's enormous 4.3-inch touchscreen is hugely impressive. And the HD2 is the first Windows Phone to come packing the HTC Sense overlay interface, as well as a capacitive multi-touch screen.

It's lightning fast, and designed by HTC to compete directly with the Apple iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre for those big-spending business power users. It should be available for purchase on or around 11 November.

3. BlackBerry Storm 2

blackberry storm 2

The much-maligned original BlackBerry Storm was a bit of a disaster for RIM. So the launch of the Storm 2 is a vital moment for RIM as a company and a brand.

Luckily, the Storm 2 doesn't disappoint. The sleek and weighty feel of the Storm 2 is that of a quality piece - the SurePress screen needs that around it. It's also busting to the seams with applications pre-installed, and a 2GB card isn't too shabby either.

We have big issues with the SurePress technology which drives the Storm 2's interface, but even so, this is a great handset for the usual BlackBerry target audience.

2. Apple iPhone 3GS

The iphone 3g s

What? What's this? The Apple iPhone in at number 2? That's right, folks – the iPhone has been beaten into second place.

There's no denying the quality of the iPhone, and really it could just as easily have come out on top. Still though, we'll get to that on the next page.

The iPhone 3GS is a stunning handset. It's faster than the iPhone 3G and also has a better camera, so if you're thinking of getting an iPhone for the first time, we reckon opting for the 3GS is a no-brainer, even if the 3G is slightly cheaper.

1. HTC Hero

The htc hero

there's a reason why the HTC Hero has received so much praise this year – it's brilliant. End-of-year award ceremonies aplenty are naming the Hero as best gadget, best mobile phone and so on, and rightly so.

It's the most complete Android handset to date, and as such it's the only phone out there that can really claim to compete with the iPhone.

In truth, it's probably not better than the iPhone. But it's certainly no worse either, so we thought it only fair to give it the top spot – not least because of the huge potential that Android is bringing to the table.

The iPhone is no longer the out-and-out best touchscreen consumer phone on the market, and for that we can be grateful because competition brings with it innovation, which for us can only be a good thing

if u have a dream to buy these like phones ???

9. Mr. Bao Xishun

bao-xishun

9th among the top 10 tallest men in the world? A Chinese guy again, Bao Xishun. I’m pretty sure China is emerging as the nation of Nutrition (or is it overnutrition? no offence! just kidding). Bao was born in 1951 in Inner Mongolia and is now leading a very happy life with his wife. Xishun has his name in the Guinness world records as the tallest man in the world.

Height: 7.9 feet

8. Mr. Sultan Kosen

sultan_kosen

Whose standing tall at the 8th position of top 10 tallest men list? Sultan Kosen from Turkey. Sultan is quite a young guy (born on 1983) and is a known tallest basketball player. Sultan happened to have a lot of back problems because of his heights. Not much information is available about him anywhere but, we do know that he was very very tall!. Supposedly he is the tallest basket ball player recorded.

Height: 8 feet

7. Mr. Alexander Sizonenko

alexander-sizonenko

Hope I don’t piss USA by saying that the 7th tallest man in the world is a Russian. Alexander Sizoneko was born in Russia in 1959 and since a long time he has been a very good basket ball player representing Russia. He has represented Russia in many basketball matches and presently he is divorced and lives along with his son in Saint Petersburg. That’s our 7thtallest man in the world.

Height: 8 feet

6. Mr. Suleiman Ali

suleiman-ali

Born in Libya in 1943, Suleiman Ali Nashnush is the 6th tallest man in the world who ever lived. Sadly he passed away on 25th of February 1991. Guess what? He too was one of the tallest basket ball player and also performed as an actor. In fact he has also acted in a film “Satyricon”. Well, how good is that, that a small country is represented by a tall guy?

Height: 8.05 feet

5. Gabriel Estevao Monjane

gabriel-estvo-monjane

Born on 1944, Gabriel is supposedly one of the tallest African who ever lived. Monjane’s abnormal height growth started right after the birth because of the over active pituitary gland. In 1988 he entered the Guinness book of world records for the title of tallest man in the world. Gabriel died in 1990 because of a high fall at his home.

Height: 8.1 feet

4. Mr. Vaino Myllyrinne

Vaino-Myllyrinne

On the list of top 10 tallest men in the world we have a guy from Finland. Born in 1909, Vaino was 8.1 feet tall and is still the top 4th among the tallest men. He was one of the tallest soldier who served the defence of Finland. And he was also voted the 12th greatest people by a TV show. At least there is one person who did something other than just play basket ball right? Vaino passed away in 1963.

Height: 8.14 feet

3. Leonid Stadnyk

Leonid-Stadnyk

Not enough ? This guy from Ukraine who was born on August 5,1970 and was supposed to be entering the Guinness book of world records for the title of tallest man on earth, but he did not as he refused to get his height measured. This guy is still alive and growing. Climb your terraces, probably you could see him (just kidding). So that was our 3rd toptallest man.

Height: 8.5 feet

2. John Rogan

Were you wondering how come Russia has a tallest man and USA doesn’t have anyone to beat him? You’re mistaken. Born in USA, John is the top 2nd tallest man in the world who ever lived. In fact he is the tallest afro American. Unfortunately we don’t have his picture. Do you think its cool to be at the top of the list of top 10 tall men? ask him, as he suffered for years and could not walk because of his height. Sadly, he is not alive now.

Height: 8.9 feet

1. Robert Wadlow

Is this a colrobert-wadlowd war or what? the tallest man in the world is an American! (or is it the only recorded fact?) Born in Alton, USA, Robert Wadlow grew to a height of a staggering 8.11 feet. He still remains thetallest man in the world. Unfortunately Wadlow died at a very young age (22). But the world will always remember the person who always walked tall among the little men in the world.

That was a sweet-short post about the top 10 tallest men in the world.

top 10 beautiful EYES

Top 10 most beautiful eyes

Finding the world’s most beautiful eyes was challenging, to say the least. With a list that started at 50 sets of beautiful eyes that then had to be reduced to 10, well, you can imagine the hesitation to exclude some of the many gorgeous women that were considered. Some of the lovely ladies whoe missed breaking the top ten were Megan Fox, Raquel Welch and, believe it or not, Marie Osmond who were all in the initial 50.

One of the most difficult tasks for this list of the most beautiful eyes was finding a large head shot that showcased their eyes. Most photos included the entire female’s body and when you look at the list of women below you know why that is a good thing – most certainly had a beautiful body to match their incredible eyes. So we did the best we could and looked for nice photography that concentrated on the face and the eyes.
